36 Hours in Washington, D.C.

It’s peak cherry blossom season in our nation’s capitol right now, so I wanted to share a few quick favorites that would make for the perfect 36 hours in Washington, DC if you’re headed there this week. I was in DC two weekends ago for a short visit with my best friend, Paige, but these images are from a trip we took last spring that I shared on stories but never published on the blog! What are your favorite spots in D.C? Would love recommendations for our next trip in May!

DAY ONE

Check into the Hay Adams – We loved staying at The Hay Adams for its history, beautiful suites, and because it’s so centrally located we could walk to most events on our itinerary. I love that our bedroom was done in a toile that features iconic revolutionary era motifs and we even had a full sitting room which is so nice for throwing the contents of your suitcase around then having a separate, serene space to sleep in. The Hay Adams is a member of Leading Hotels of the World, where “nothing is overlooked, except The White House”!

Dinner at Le Diplomate – I cannot recommend this place more. Le Diplomate is a playful spot to enjoy a beautiful French meal in a chic yet casual brasserie setting within walking distance of the Hay-Adams. Great for a date night or meeting friends or dinner, be sure to grab a cute matchbook on the way out!

Drinks at The Tabard Inn – The oldest inn in Washington, DC that also has an incredible cocktail program where you can have a drink in their snug ground floor lobby next to a roaring fire.

Late night snack at Shake Shack – After a few drinks at Tabard Inn, you’ll need a snack. Since we don’t have Shake Shack in San Francisco I always eat here every chance I get. I always order the ‘Shroom Burger, french fries, and a Black and White Shake. You’ll thank me in the morning.

DAY TWO

Breakfast at The Layfayette – Wow. What a taste of DC culture. I wore a sundress to breakfast at our hotel and felt rather out of place since everyone else was in a suit and was clearly having important meetings over breakfast. (Pretty sure senators were at the table next to us.) However, the food was amazing (spring for the opulent lobster omelette) and it offers a taste of DC culture in a beautiful setting.

Tour of the Capitol or White House – We had a friend give us a tour of The Capitol, and it was so special to walk the halls where our nation’s legislation is decided.

Late Lunch at Founding Farmers DC– Co-op-owned American eatery serving seasonal comfort cuisine in a rustic setting. SO YUMMY.

Afternoon Shopping at Tuckernuck – This store is so well-curated it could render blogging obsolete. The founders all have the most amazing style and bring together a fabulous collection each season alongside style guides to show you what to wear – where. They also just released their own in-house collection a few days ago! Tuckernuck is ultimate style goals and they have such a cute storefront in Georgetown. Worth going out of your way for a visit to see what’s new!

Touring Renwick Gallery – A branch of the Smithsonian focused on American crafts and decorative arts from the 19th to 20th century, Renwick is a beautiful gallery within walking distance of the Hay Adams. Stop by on your way back from Georgetown before changing for dinner back at the hotel.

Dinner at Bad Saint – Filipino food in such a cool space. Walk-ins are welcome, however reservations are released a month in advance and fill up immediately! I’m already stalking the website to make reservations for our next trip in May.

Late night drinks at Off the Record – End the night at Off the Record, the speakeasy-style bar in the basement of the Hay Adams before finding the way back to your room.
