Last month I mentioned we were in the process of packing up our apartment – and as we put the last boxes in storage I’m excited to share with you what’s next for us!
It’s been a longtime dream of mine to travel the world, but until 12 months ago I always assumed it would be piecemeal. One week trip here, two weeks there. Well, earlier this year David and I came to the realization that if we ever wanted to do it now was the perfect time. David was due for a sabbatical after 7 years at Google and I can run my business from anywhere. We discussed the idea with family and friends and received unanimous, enthusiastic support from those close to us. So earlier this year we started preparing for a round-the-world-trip in 2017.
We leave for our first destination – Buenos Aires, Argentina – in January 2017. Followed by stints in Peru, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, South Africa, Morocco, and finishing with several months traveling around Europe. Rather than constantly being on the go and jumping between flights and hotels we’re planning to enjoy most cities for 3-4 weeks, taking our time to experience each destination like a local (well, as much as possible!) so in addition to seeing the sights we’ll learn some of the rhythms of local life: how to communicate, do laundry, shop for groceries, etc.
The thing that excites me most about the trip is spending more time with David. We’ll also be visiting friends that live abroad and seeing the places that David and I each visited separately before we started dating. We’re each taking on a bit of self-guided study while we travel. David is excited to gain more first hand experience living in emerging markets and I’m eager to study the design heritage and hospitality in each of our host countries. It’s going to be so fun finding the most beautiful places and spaces to share with all of you! Look forward to lots more “Interiors I Love” posts, hotel features, City Guides and personal style posts as I figure out how to live out of a suitcase for a year! I hope our travels – the successes and the setbacks – will inform and inspire your own. And yes, I will continue to offer interior design services – just remotely.
Now that we’ve said goodbye to our San Francisco apartment, we are looking forward to catching up with friends and family around the US throughout November (Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Illinois!), and will return to the Bay Area to stay with my parents for the holidays.
