How to Fall in Love with Winter

This morning we woke up to a beautiful blanket of fresh snow and I took our baby boy out to play in it before breakfast and can I just say, I LOVE winter?! I know that's not the most common sentiment when temps are below freezing but I just love embracing the coziest season. So, from a New England girl, here's what I love and embrace about winter.

  1. Get outside as often as possible. While my favorite winter outdoor activity is skiing, I am a big proponent of a simple daily ritual - the winter walk - first thing in the morning if possible! (Exposing yourself to early morning light is incredible for your alertness throughout the day and quality of sleep at night!) Whatever you do to spend time outdoors, be it dog walks, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, iceskating, or something else, spending time in the fresh air enjoying nature is incredible for your wellbeing. David and I love a snowy beach walk, even in 22 degree weather, and often find ourselves saying "why don't we do this more often?!"
  2. There isn't such a thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. This is just so true. Whether I'm layering my favorite cashmere sweaters (15% off with SF15!) or pulling on my shearling bean boots I find the only time I dislike winter is when I'm underdressed. You can find lots of fun winter styles in my recent daily looks here.
  3. Buy fresh flowers just because. There is something about adding plants and flowers to a room that just brings the whole space to life. Whether it's a big arrangement of white hydrangeas on your dining table or a little cup of blooms on your desk, fresh flowers will make a world of difference. I also like adding fresh potted herbs in our kitchen each winter, as the potted versions only cost a dollar or two more than the cut versions and last much longer.
  4. Learn to bake something fabulous. Now is the time to perfect your chocolate chip cookie recipe, or learn to make a chocolate soufflé! (My current project.)
  5. Host a dinner party! People often have fewer events on their calendars during the winter months, so it's the perfect time to extend an invitation for a cozy candlelit dinner at your place. Set a beautiful table, cook up some comfort food and enjoy the company of your most cherished friends and family. I love hosting a fondue party and asking guests to wear their best fair isle sweater!
  6. Organize long-forgotten corners. Things always get a bit wild during the busy holiday season and I love doing a big clear out each winter to lighten and brighten our home as we look forward to springtime. Whether that means organizing your closet, your kitchen cabinets or a guest room, I believe removing the clutter from your space helps clear your mind as well.
  7. Get more beauty sleep. I'm a night owl by nature, but when the sun sets early during the winter months I find it easier to go to bed a bit earlier as well. Getting extra Zzzzzs is incredible for everything from your hormones to skin health to mental health.
  8. Care for winter skin. With the heater on non-stop the dry winter air can take a major toll on your skin. Two Januarys ago I switched all my products to non-toxic versions and it hugely helped with all of my winter skin issues which make me crazy. Apparently I'm not alone in my winter skin woes, as when I shared how much I love this body scrub plus this body oil for combatting dry scaly skin you all went nuts! (I just reordered them after going without for a few weeks and this duo really does work miracles.) I've had a few recent requests to share my skincare and what's in my makeup bag so will try to put that together asap!
  9. Browse antique stores. I love the thrill of the hunt, and antiquing is one of my favorite past times. I especially love antiquing in the winter months as business is a little slower at many shops and dealers are often happy to spend time chatting about the provinence of a piece, and more willing to negotiate a deal! Let me know if I should create a list/map of my favorite antique shops around New England - actually, I might do this even if no one wants it. And please let me know of any of your own favorite antique shops in the comments!
  10. Experience a favorite destination in winter. We LOVE doing weekend trips to our favorite summer spots in wintertime, with the added bonus of more affordable hotel rates, better service and fewer crowds. We're heading up to Kennebunkport this weekend (a January tradition!) and have also had the best time during winter trips to places ranging from Paris, France to Woodstock, Vermont in years past.
