Transitional Dress Code
I’ll admit that in January and February when temperatures were in the teens I was reaching for jeans and a cozy sweater almost every day. But with spring around the corner I’m starting to eye the dresses in my closet and thinking of ways to style them for these in-between days as the ground begins to thaw. The key themes to make it work are smart layering and tactical accessorizing.
Layering with a turtleneck: Adding a tight fitting turtleneck knit under a crewneck or v-neck dress is a great way to layer while adding more dimension to your look. This method works with a sleeveless, short sleeved or long sleeved dress.
Wear a white coat: Nothing brightens up a look like a crisp white coat, which adds lots of warmth but also keeps the outfit visually light. My white wool trench coat is a few seasons old but this one by the same brand is just as fabulous. (Light blue (love this!) and this lemon confection would also work well!)
Layering with a loose sweater: Perhaps the comfiest combo on this list, a loose fitting, chunky sweater on top of a dress is another stylish way to stay warm. This idea works best with looser, less structured silhouettes and flowy materials. For example, avoid a wool shift dress and opt for a fluttering maxi dress.
Knee-high boots: Pop on your favorite riding boots or heeled knee-high boots with a maxi, midi or mini dress! So simple! (And if it’s still very chilly wooly socks will do wonders for warming you up!)
Hidden leggings: I think many have spent much of the last year in leggings — no need to take them off now! When hidden under a maxi dress, no one will ever know they’re there. Just be sure to roll them up high enough so they don’t show when sitting down. If you have knee length leggings, a midi dress is also fair game.
