Deer Mountain Inn

Amidst a very busy Q4, David and I were able to step away from work for a bit to celebrate my birthday in the mountains – holing up at the Deer Mountain Inn in the Catskills for a laid-back weekend celebration. We visited in late October, and despite a fear the fall foliage would be well past peak we enjoyed eye-popping color everywhere we turned. The inn’s cozy Ralph Lauren vibe was the perfect setting to curl up by the fire with a book after a day of hiking. Spectacular in the fall, Tannersville is even better known for its winter activities when Hunter Mountain ski resort is in full swing. I’d love to return for a cozy weekend when the inn is covered in a blanket of snow! 

Many thanks to Logan at the Deer Mountain Inn for all his wonderful recommendations. We had planned another trip that fell through at the last minute due to Covid regulation changes, and made a last minute booking on a Friday afternoon, packed in 30 minutes and threw things in the car arriving at the inn right after dark but (thankfully!) in time for dinner. We hadn’t planned anything in advance but each of Logan’s recommendations made for fun and full days, ending each evening with a cocktail by their outdoor fire pit. Such a sweet escape and easy to reach from New York City or New England.

Hikes – Artists Rock and and Kaaterskill Falls are both within 20 minutes of the inn. Our first hike was a bit cloudy (the photo of us sitting on the tartan blanket) so we returned the next day to do the same hike in the sun and were rewarded with expansive views of the Catskills (the last photo in this post!) , so incredibly stunning and worth the return trip!

Restaurants – We did one dinner at the inn (highly recommend!), one at Jägerberg (a German-style beer hall) and made a trip to neighboring Woodstock for my birthday dinner at Silvia. We also had fun ordering takeout from Mama’s Boy Burgers and bringing it back to the inn to enjoy at one of the picnic tables scattered throughout their grounds.

Antiquing – There are a few antique shops in Tannersville worth popping into and several more in Saugerties as well, where I picked up a set of flow blue bowls as a souvenir.
