A First Look at Fall Outerwear

As the first crisp mornings of fall creep in, now is the moment to refresh your outerwear lineup. From chic swingy mac coats that make rainy days feel polished to timeless options in leather, suede, wool, and plaid, the best pieces tend to vanish from the racks long before the temperatures truly dip. If you’re thinking about adding a new favorite layer this season, don’t wait—these early fall finds are too good to miss.

  • The Brits really know rain gear and this swingy mac coat is super chic. Made of a gorgeous waterproof gabardine (the fabric that made Burberry's raincoats iconic), the slightly oversized cut is perfect for throwing on over chunky knits and blazers without being too tight in the arms. It also has a detachable hood when you need to Save! The! Hair! This piece will be the working or city girl's MVP fall through spring, I just love it so much!
  • Barn coats are having a moment and there are so many beautiful options to choose from! I just got this plaid number, which has beautiful fabric and the welt pockets feel a little more elevated than the typical patch pocket. Other options include this cropped version for only $120 and this mustard version - I love the clasps!
  • I just bought this chocolate jacket which has a flattering drawstring waist that creates a peplum shape when pulled in, and looks great with flared jeans (15% off with STACIE15) and a scarf at the neck!
  • This floral dress coat is just beyond!!!
  • Leather and suede jackets are back in a big way and two favorites include this gorgeous olive suede number (20% off with StacieM20) and this chocolate leather jacket.
  • I pre-ordered this wool car coat and it arrived over the weekend. I love the simple car coat silhouette and thick boiled wool. The body isn't lined but the sleeves are, and I think that's the right call to maintain a nice drape, while still allowing sweaters to slide into the sleeves smoothly. A chic option for any occasion, it will look great with jeans and a ball cap, or to top off workwear!
  • A reversible wool jacket (20% off with StacieM20) is a smart addition to your fall weekend getaway wardrobe. Two looks in one!
  • Not a coat, but this jacquard wool poncho merits mentioning for it's sheer loveliness.
  • Tuckernuck's collab with Barbour is so fun! My two favorites are this wax jacket (a few left) and I just ordered this quilted jacket. Don't forget the coordinating umbrella!
  • This quilted jacket for children is my favorite thing. Our son wore the olive version non-stop last fall (seen here), and I got it in tan and olive for this fall. Too cute!
  • This plaid collarless jacket pairs perfectly with a cashmere scarf and is perfect for a Saturday spent apple picking. (I have last season's version (on sale), seen here!)
  • In fact, Sezane has a bunch of cute plaid jackets in their fall collection including this and this. I hope they restock the scarf coat so I can nab one!
  • I've had this classic trench coat Brooks Brothers Trench Coat c/o for 6 or 7 years and it has held up SO well. Definitely worth the investment.

A few notes on the outfit in today's post - My corduroy pants (15% off with STACIE15) (15% off with "Stacie15") are awesome! Very comfortable and flattering, plus a nice ankle length (I'm 5'9") and look like they're made to go with my block-heeled pumps, both from a matching color and coordinating silhouette perspective. This pant + shoe pairing is the foundation of countless fall outfits, whether you wear a silk blouse like I did, or shirt + blazer for the office, or a chunky cream sweater for an autumnal dinner date!

My earrings are a new version of a much-loved pair from Dorsey that I wore a ton last year. They are gold vermeil leverbacks, and the brand updated this year's stone from white sapphire to moissanite for even more sparkle. I love the gunmetal halo around the stone, which gives them the look of a vintage estate jewelry find, and works so well with autumn and winter's moody hues. I have the medium size and love wearing them with everything from a sweater and jeans to evening wear!
