A Getaway to Litchfield County, CT with Sarah Flint

This post is in partnership with Sarah Flint.

David and I make frequent trips between New Hampshire and New York City, and one of our favorite waypoints is Litchfield County, specifically the Mayflower Inn. This part of Connecticut is full of small towns nestled amongst rolling hills, each with a cafe and  handful of independent shops. It’s a charming corner of New England and the perfect place to break up the drive when we’re on our way to or from the city. We’ve stayed here before, so when the Sarah Flint team asked me to share a perfect day in one of my favorite New England destinations, Litchfield County was an easy choice! So here’s my perfect day (and what I’d wear) on a getaway to Litchfield County.

Morning

There’s something so romantic about waking up in a canopy bed, and many of the suites at the Mayflower Inn boast beds clad in beautiful fabrics and a pile of pillows. We enjoyed a slow start to the day with coffee and tea by the fire in our room, cozied up in silk pajamas (similar here) and the most beautiful shearling-lined Jacquard Fireside Slipper from Sarah Flint. (I know no one sees your pajamas except you, but this is not the place for going to bed in an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants!) These opulent rose gold slippers are the perfect complement to fall and winter’s rich hues and the comfiest thing you can put on your feet at home. I also have them in navy suede and they are perfect for chilly mornings when you first get out of bed.

Popping on a cotton rollneck and big cashmere shawl, we walked down to a late breakfast in the Garden Room.  Our breakfast was the best hotel breakfast we’ve had in ages, and highly recommend trying the “country breakfast” and ordering the beignets for a dessert. If you snag a table close to the window you can enjoy views of the lawn and Shakespeare garden while sipping your second cup of coffee.

Afternoon

Many of you prefer to wear sneakers when walking a lot on your travels and I am thrilled to share I have finally found a pair of sneakers that are as chic as they are comfortable – the Wanderlust Sneaker by Sarah Flint. One part sneaker, one part oxford, these stylish shoes are perfect for an afternoon spent exploring a new town on foot. (I especially love the pretty grosgrain laces.) I paired my sneakers with a cozy sweater, blazer (similar here) and my current favorite jeans (size down) for an afternoon of antiquing in the nearby towns of New Preston and Woodbury. My must-do spots include:

Plain Goods – antiques, home goods, and timeless clothing for children and adults alike, this beautifully merchandised shop in New Preston has something for everyone. The owners curate beautiful pieces from other brands as well as design their own pieces, as well as give upholstered pieces new life with fabulous fabrics. Trust me, you’ll want it all.

Mill House Antiques – Situated in a former mill, I love this place for their beautiful case goods such as secretaries, dressers and highboys. Smaller items include a selection of paintings, art, tea caddies and lamps.

Farmhouse Antiques – Tucked down a long driveway off the main street in Woodbury this barn is full of antique tabletop and decor. Browse the large collections of silverplate utensils, creamware, books and brass candlesticks and you’ll be sure to find a souvenir!

Evening

Back at the hotel we settled into Adirondack chairs by one of fire pits to take in the sunset, then returned to our room to change for dinner. I am loving chocolate brown right now and paired a brown cashmere sweater dress with a pair of Sarah Flint’s Sabina Tortoise Heels for a dinner date at The Tap Room. While all of Sarah’s shoes are designed with comfort in mind I’m currently loving slingbacks as my feet swell a bit during pregnancy. Plus, the gorgeous patent leather and brown satin cap toe make the shoe something special while still being very neutral. After a gorgeous dinner we returned to our room and I reached for my slippers again. Bon nuit!
