Classic Fall Style with Brooks Brothers
When we moved back to New York earlier this fall several people asked how my style might change as a result of changing coasts. In truth, even though I was born in California, I've always felt most at home on the east coast, both from a cultural and sartorial perspective. So while I don't think there's a drastic difference, I do feel much more at ease and "myself" out here. The biggest change since moving was how busy we've become. David is starting a company and my work increased ten-fold which got me thinking about elegant wardrobe staples and how critical those are in helping one get out the door each morning feeling pulled together without too much fuss. For me, those staples are a cable turtleneck, smartly tailored blazer, and great coat to throw on over everything when the temperatures dip. Enter Brooks Brothers, an iconic American company with phenomenal quality and timeless pieces.
The hero piece in the look is definitely this camel wrap coat which is inherently versatile, timeless and warm. While I didn't think much of it when I saw the coat online, once I slipped it on in store I fell in LOVE. The raglan sleeves are the secret to its versatility and really sets this coat apart - the inset sleeve is just roomy enough to drape beautifully over blazers, turtleneck sweaters or a dress. Soft, luxurious camel hair from Italy's Tollegno mill elevates this classic piece which will be in my closet forever. This style is enduring, can be worn at any age and is the epitome of American elegance.
I particularly love pairing my coats with a sweater in a matching hue - a wardrobe trick I call the "modern twinset" which instantly makes you feel more put together. Camel turtleneck sweaters are a bit of an obsession for me, and are the foundation of my cold weather wardrobe. You've seen them recently here and here, and even in dress form here. You can find my embellished wool one (on sale!) or this luxurious cashmere version also looks great with the coat. I love the special beaded detailing on the sweater in this post, which makes it feel different and more "holiday" than most.
A smartly tailored wool blazer is another of my wardrobe staples and all the better when designed by Brooks Brothers women's creative director, Zac Posen. Posen is known for bringing his evening wear skill set (which requires a very precise fit) to the Brooks Brothers attitude, updating iconic pieces from shirting to trench coats to blazers with a modern, tailored sensibility. The end result is a blazer that fits like a glove and is made with wool from England's renowned Abraham Moon Mill, and finished with very pretty leather elbow patches. I love the plaid so much I opted for another take on the "modern twinset" by pairing the blazer with a matching scarf. Tapered burgundy ankle length pants keep it polished, and I'll swap them out for skinny denim and knee high boots or wellies when I want to take this outfit from town to he country. xx, SF
