Fall Fair Isle
As we approach November, I'm all about fair isle. The earliest examples of fair isle appeared in the 1850s, adorning fishermen's caps and sweaters in Scotland's far northern island of Fair Isle. The now-timeless pattern feels cozy and festive all at once, and is an easy way to add a little pattern to your outfit. Whether you wrap up in an oversized cardigan, or layer a crewneck under your blazer there's a festive fair isle sweater for everyone. I've rounded up my favorites from this year below, including a few finds for your guy and littles!
- I am such a sucker for a chunky wrap cardigan, and all the more so when it's in a handsome fair isle pattern. A sweater this substantial easily stands in for a coat this time of year and is a chic and unexpected "third piece" to pop on over button downs and turtleneck sweaters alike.
- A classic fair isle crewneck is a winter staple, whether you're cutting down your Christmas tree, getting ready for a day of skiing, or doning a black sequin midi skirt and heels for a holiday party! This one can do all of those activities with ease. (Worn in Maine here!)
- This dress proves Fair Isle isn't just for sweaters.
- Perhaps one of my favorites of the season due to it's many beautiful hues, this olive turtleneck fair isle is selling out quickly! (Worn here and here, and you can find more sizes here.)
- J.Crew launched a collection of premium cashmere called Spring Street and this fair isle is a chic monochromatic option for easy layering. (Worn here!)
- This gray turtleneck version would look fabulous with cream trousers, a sparkly heels and these earrings.
- Blue and brown are an unexpected color combination and this cardigan would look so chic over a brown silk slip dress.
- If you're on the hunt for super colorful options, Boden is the best! (And has a ton of mommy and me options if you want to match your mini!)
- Fair Isle is a preppy staple and it's no surprise L.L.Bean has the best selection of affordable styles - most under $100! My personal favorite is this cream version that could be mistaken for a designer sweater.
- I love a guy in fair isle and David has quite the collection. A few new styles I have my eye on for him include this red and blue version (how is it 100% merino wool and only $35?!) and I'm obsessed with the colors in this olive jacquard sweater!
- How sweet is this childrens sweater and the matching hat!
- This gorgeous wool scarf is an easy way to add a touch of fair isle to your look. Or, give it to your guy as a gift then "borrow" it from time to time. :)
- Obsessed with the yummy autumnal hues and cozy alpaca contents of this sweater.
- Fair isle socks are a stylish touch to any outfit and make great stocking stuffers!
