A Family Getaway at Sebago Lake
Ok, here it is. A place so special I considered keeping it to myself. Hidden on the northern shore of Maine's picturesque Sebago Lake lies Migis Lodge. This full American plan camp is a cross between a Ralph Lauren set and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Adirondack Camp. We've been here in the summer in years past, but this year we visited in October for the first time and autumn might just be my favorite season in this wonderful place.
My in-laws come up for a week every October and we spend a mix of time at our house, and exploring someplace nearby together. They are super active and Migis was the perfect destination for a multigenerational family getaway. From tennis to lake swimming, boating to hikes through the forest there's no shortage of fabulous ways to spend time outdoors. (Plus water skiing and paddle boarding in the summer!) I love a cold water swim and keep saying we should do it off our dock at home, but I just haven't tried it yet. There is something so invigorating about the ritual and I was able to convince David to hop in the lake with me, then we warmed up in the lakefront sauna right after. A favorite memory and pure bliss!
We booked the Cliffside cabin, which had 3 bedrooms, a massive front porch with wood burning fireplace plus a sleeping porch with a gorgeous four-poster bed that is the stuff of dreams. Our cozy porch setup was perfect for hanging out on a rainy afternoon, and while most of the guest rooms are in freestanding cabins dotted along the lake there are a few smaller rooms in the main lodge as well. Most guests seem to book the same cabin for the same week every year, so
As a full American plan camp, all meals are included - and the food is just incredible. Campy, but very well done. Weather permitting they rotate serving meals between their main lodge dining room and different cookout locations around the property. (SO FUN!) You can even have the kitchen prep a boxed lunch for your group if you want to picnic on your own.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of a Migis stay is their daily cocktail hour on the terrace outside of the main lodge. There is a strict dress code (men are required to wear jackets to dinner) and guests settle into the Adirondack chairs to watch the sunset over the lake, cocktail in hand. On warmer evenings I love reserving a table on the porch for dinner, and families with children have their own little space on the side of the main dining room. The whole experience is dripping with nostalgia for a bygone era ,and I love looking back on these photos of such a sweet weekend together with family!
