Napa Valley for my Mom’s Birthday
When asked what I will miss the most about living in California, Napa Valley is at the top of that list and I’m thankful we were able to sneak in one more special weekend last month in celebration of my Mom’s birthday. I’ve always loved Napa for the beautiful landscape and delicious wines, but since moving to San Francisco I gained a new appreciation for it’s near perfect weather. (If you’re unaware, summers in SF are chilly and it rarely gets above 65 degrees.)
David and I arrived a day early to soak up the sun at Las Alcobas and enjoy their gorgeous pool. All I can say is it is chic chic chic! Their ultra-luxurious property is within walking distance of downtown St. Helena and has something for everyone. The rooms are quite minimalist and modern, making their wonderful balconies outfitted with fire pits and views of Beringer’s vineyards to focal point of each space. (There’s a beautiful new bridge connecting Beringer’s tasting room and Las Alcobas if you don’t want to journey too far for a tasting!) The whole property has a spa-like zen to it, and you can’t help but leave your worries behind when sipping wine by the fire. If you are looking for a hotel for a special occasion or honeymoon in Napa this. is. it. Perfectly private and utterly romantic Las Alcobas is my top recommendation for a memorable visit to wine country.
Settling in at our table on the covered porch of Acacia House we discussed our upcoming move over margaritas - the house specialty. (Las Alcobas’s flagship property is in Mexico City so you know their margarita is divine!) Head Chef Chris Constantio of Top Chef fame, spins up culinary magic from local and sustainable produce resulting in a fresh take on California cuisine.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the weekend was visiting Colgin Cellars, where my younger brother Scott is the enologist for a tour of their spectacular property and taste some very special wines. We had the house all to ourselves as Scott led us through the vineyards, production facilities and barrel rooms - ending the tour in the cellar that contains one of the most impressive wine collections in the world!
Aside from Colgin, we also visited Hudson Ranch for a tasting and stopped at Oakville Grocery several times for coffee, breakfast, lunch sandwiches and meats and cheese! (Can you tell it’s one of our favorite spots!?) The weekend was so wonderful and one of my absolute favorite trips to Napa!
Thank you to Las Alcobas for hosting us for the weekend!
xx, SF
