Newport is Always a Good Idea
There’s nothing quite like a New England summer in my book, and while we’ve spent many weekends near home bouncing between the beach and picnics in the park, our 3 day trip to Newport was a definite highlight of the summer.
And of all the fabulous destinations along New England’s coast, Newport might be America’s favorite summer playground. Whether you love touring the Gilded Age Mansions or want to catch a polo match, take a sunset sail or sip a martini while a band plays at Clarke Cooke House there is something for everyone here.
There are so many wonderful lodging options around Newport it can be hard to choose, but if you want to be in town for dining, shopping, sailing and sights like the international Tennis Hall of Fame, the newly opened Brenton Hotel is as chic as they come. The hotel’s modern, nautical vibe perfectly reflects their harborside location, and it’s just a short walk to any restaurant in town. Aside from enjoying our beautiful room, we spent a lot of time lingering in the hotel’s “Living Room” which is a restaurant and bar with glittering waterfront views. Whether starting the day with a cup of coffee or ending the day with a martini – the living room is a yummy spot any time of day. (And the rooftop bar is another spot not to be missed.)
We visited Newport in January 2020 and while we loved our winter getaway we were extra excited to visit this summer for one thing – POLO. An evening at the Newport International Polo Grounds is such a good time and the best $20 you can spend while you’re here. Lawn admission earns you a patch of grass on the edge of the field, so I recommend you pack a picnic, don your preppy best and take in a match! (The Brenton has special packages through the end of September, and you can choose an activity to be included in your stay from sailing, to polo, to Mansion tickets!)
Additional favorites from our trip included touring the Breakers, shopping at Tyler Boe on the Wharf, and drinks/dinner at the Clarke Cooke House! For more recommendations you can check out the post from our winter getaway here.
