The Coats You’ll Reach For All Season

As temperatures drop, a great coat becomes the centerpiece of every outfit. Whether you reach for a timeless camel wrap coat, a heritage plaid, or a bold pop of fuchsia, the right outerwear instantly elevates your look while keeping you warm all season long. Below, I’ve rounded up 15 of the best coats to carry you stylishly through fall and winter.

  • I've been raving about this bouclé car coat for weeks, as it's been my easy go-to for casual moments when I just throw something on and run out the door. Currently on sale for under $200, the clean, above-the-knee silhouette works beautifully with jeans and a sweater, or is polished enough to pair with office attire.
  • Shawl collars are big this season and I'm thrilled. Their elegant-yet-cozy vibe is perfect for a variety of looks. I just got this long burgundy version and it looks $$$$ but is under $500. (Also comes in black.) I'm packing it for a trip to NYC and it really goes with everything, and I especially like how it hits right above the ankle, perfect for pairing with longer dresses.
  • Another stunning shawl collar coat is this olive double-breasted version, which has a bit more structure and is super warm.
  • I bought this fuchsia overcoat while in NYC and can't wait for the temperatures to drop to pull it out. The vibrant hue is just the thing to brighten the dark days of winter and it has a gorgeous retro shape while still feeling totally current. I was surprised the petite was the best size for me (I'm 5'9") so consider sizing down for a not-too-oversized fit.
  • A classic camel coat deserves a spot in every woman's wardrobe. I personally love this style with a belt, which defines your waist and helps keep out the cold. Mine is several years old from Brooks Brothers, but this season's version is practically identical, and a few other favorites include this and this!
  • There are so many fabulous leopard coats available now. This one is the best value for the price in my opinion (20% off with "Stacie20"), plus I love it's versatile shape. This shorter leopard jacket is a spurge, but something you'll wear for years.
  • Duffle coats are a chic option for country escapes and two I own and love are this preppy navy duffle (so well made! seen here) and this long olive duffle (seen here). The green coat is lighter that you'd expect, making it great for girls who live in warmer climates but still love coats!
  • Capes are the wardrobe hero you didn't know you need. This chocolate brown one would look amazing with jeans tucked into knee-high boots, or over trousers with a pointed toe boot. This chambray blue cape is also gorgeous and an unexpected color. It would look amazing with browns, grays or creams.
  • It won't be long before I need to pull out my shearling coat, which is a favorite way to layer on winter's coldest days. Mine is a cocoon style and on major sale, but I also love this if you want a more feminine shape or this for casual days.
  • This smart little black coat has a 60's vibe that looks great with mini skirts, tailored trousers and everything in between. Currently on sale for under $250, I also love the ivory version! (Seen here.)
  • Short wool jackets offer casual ways to stay warm. This plaid scarf coat is beautiful and instantly makes the outfit. Similarly this polished olive wool jacket is a bit more elevated than your trusty Barbour, but can top off casual and dressier looks with ease.
  • Plaid coats are some of my most-worn pieces, especially when they feature a plaid with several colors. This brown plaid is a staple you'll reach for again and again, and I'm super tempted by this handsome houndstooth coat!
  • A longer black coat is a wardrobe staple, and I find I almost never wear black casually. Since I'm almost always dressed up when wearing black I generally look for black coats with a bit of polish. I've had this tailored black coat for years and it's stunning. A slim fit perfect for pairing with cocktail dresses or jacquard trousers as I did here. If you're looking for something with a relaxed fit I love the long peacoat styling of this coat.
