The Eveningwear Edit: Timeless Styles for Special Occasions

With a season of celebrations ahead, I'm sharing a first look at my favorite occasionwear for all the special events on your calendar. From timeless little black dresses for cocktail parties to glamorous gowns for black-tie galas, elegant looks for a weekend of wedding festivities, and a few statement pieces that are simply too beautiful to pass up, there's something for every invitation. This year's edit is full of rich jewel tones, luxurious velvets, sculptural silhouettes, and just the right amount of sparkle. I especially love pieces that feel special now but can be worn for years to come, whether it's a beautiful black gown you'll reach for time and again or a statement skirt you can style in countless ways. Consider this cheat sheet to dressing beautifully for the celebrations ahead!

  • I wore this sculptural black jacquard dress for a night out in NYC, and the twisted off-the-shoulder neckline is so elegant. I paired it with a black satin pouch with black tassels, asymmetric pearl earrings, and statement black heels with a sparkly ornament. (Mine are a past-season version of my favorite suede pump, but these give a similarly embellished feel.) Honestly, this is an outfit that will work for so many occasions from September through February. A winner in my book!
  • This jacquard gown is a great find under $200. The one-shoulder neckline is so chic, and the side slit makes it easy to move (and dance) in. Add a tennis bracelet and heels for a winter wedding.
  • I packed this red wool-blend drop waist maxi for NYC and love the glamorous, full skirt. Perfect for holiday dinners or a night at the opera. (Take your smaller size.)
  • Arriving in a dramatic coat is half the fun of a party. This floor-length shearling coat has a removable collar and serious old-world glamour, while this cashmere wrap coat with wide cuffs feels more effortless for everyday. (Both run oversized, so size down for a closer fit!)
  • This wool off-the-shoulder dress is a timeless piece you can dress up or down. I love the idea of adding a statement belt and gold heels for parties, then swapping in slingbacks with just a hint of leopard for date night.
  • One piece of jewelry I keep wearing this fall is this diamond dome cocktail ring in 14k gold. The rays of pavé diamonds catch the light beautifully, and it's bold enough to stand on its own with a little black dress.
  • Under $200 and so elegant, this ruched velvet midi dress has a pretty V-neck and long sleeves for chilly nights.
  • Cranberry silk dupioni is so festive, and the tie waist and full skirt on this dress (15% off with STACIE15) give it a classic, ladylike shape. Wear it to Christmas Eve dinner or a holiday wedding with pumps and a velvet bow in your hair.
  • Not a dress person? Try this all-black formula: a strapless top with a dramatic draped sash, cropped flare ponte pants, and satin pumps with a pearl cluster at the toe. It's sleek and modern for a cocktail party, and the pumps will dress up anything in your closet.
  • Hill House Home's metallic floral corset top and matching skirt are made to go together, and the tie shoulders are such a pretty detail. Style them as a set for holiday parties with my gold heeled sandals, or split them up: the top with black trousers, the skirt with a cashmere sweater.
  • Splurge alert: this black velvet column gown is pure timeless elegance, with a square neckline and long sleeves. It's the kind of dress you'll pull out for black-tie galas and winter weddings for years to come.
  • An embellished collar turns this black viscose midi dress into instant party attire. It's polished enough for an office holiday party straight from your desk, and it'll carry right into New Year's dinner with heels and a sparkly clutch.
  • Emerald satin feels so festive, and the twisted ruching at the waist of this gown is incredibly flattering. (I own this dress in red and it's such a great shape!)
  • Plum is such a rich color for the holidays, and the dupioni on this dress has a lovely subtle sheen. The full midi skirt feels polished for an office party or holiday dinner. Add these gold slingbacks for added shine.
  • Statement skirts are such a fun way to rework pieces you already own. This bronze sequin skirt is a steal at $111 and shines with a black turtleneck for a holiday party. For a gala, the cranberry ball skirt (15% off with STACIE15) paired with a crisp button-down is so elegant and unexpected.
  • Shimmering metallic threading gives this gold jacquard dress gorgeous texture, with a sweetheart neckline and a slit at the back. It's perfect for a New Year's Eve party now, and it would be lovely at a summer wedding with strappy sandals.
  • Holiday parties call for something fun, and this red sequined strapless dress delivers major style for under $300.
  • Feather trim at the hem makes this pink silk twill swing dress such a joy. The easy T-shirt silhouette skims rather than clings, so it's comfortable all night at a holiday party.
  • Celebrating somewhere warm this year? Tory's iconic ivory linen caftan is a forever piece, and the hand-applied embellished trim is exquisite.
  • Velvet season is here! This burgundy midi dress has the sweetest ruffled sleeves and comes in under $200, while this jade V-neck dress with draped shoulders is absolutely stunning in person (seen here). Both are perfect for holiday dinners and winter weddings with strappy heels and a beaded bag.
