The Spring Trench Coat Edit

Stacie Flinner Charleston Spring Trench Coat Edit-4.jpg

‘Tis the season for trench coats and a classic trench is a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Thanks to their timeless details and neutral colors, trench coats are versatile pieces that can do no wrong. These wardrobe workhorses can adapt to the changing seasons effortlessly, working for a variety of climates and weather changes which make them perfect travel companions as you fly from one climate to the next. Plus the best trench coats can be worn and enjoyed for decades to come, and handed down to your daughter. I’ve owned and loved this khaki classic for years, but also snapped up this sage green version for a little variety since I wear trench coats so often in the springtime.

Since Thomas Burberry invented the weather-proofed, cotton textile called gabardine in 1879 to outfit the military, the trench coat has become a stylish staple beloved by everyone from the armed forces to Hollywood film actors. Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. You can channel the same, main character energy (with a *hint* of mystery) by adding one to your wardrobe. I’ve rounded up my favorites from across the web for you, with thoughts on how I’d style them. Happy shopping!

  • My sage colored trench above is a fun take on the classic style with oversized epaulettes on the shoulder and a longer hemline that makes it perfect for popping over spring midi dresses. (also comes in a classic khaki!)
  • I’ve owned and loved this trench coat for years. The above the knee hem pairs well with pants and minidresses alike, and the fabric is wrinkle resistant. Perfect for traveling!
  • The gold standard. You’ll hand down this trench coat to your daughter and she’ll hand it down to her daughter.
  • Very similar to Burberry but this trench is a fraction of the price!
  • Looking for a splashy trench to splurge on? This one has loads of personality while still being classic. Perfect for throwing on over a simple white top and black pant combo without looking boring.
  • While technically a mac coat, this pared down silhouette does the job when you want a streamlined look.
  • I love the volume and cape-like silhouette of this trench balanced by fitted cropped pants and a pair of pumps.
  • A softer hue that works well with spring pastels and a longer ladylike hemline make this understated jacket a winner.
  • I love the look of rich chocolate browns with bright white and this trench is just the thing to pop over an all white outfit.
  • This trench is ultra figure flattering, cinch it at the waist and pair with jeans and a heel like the model.
  • J.Crew has been making this trench for years and it comes in several colors (green, navy, khaki!) at an attractive price point!
