The Twinset is Back! Here’s How to Wear the Preppy Staple

I'm not one to follow trends, but when classic styles come back into vogue I eat it up because it means designers create a lot of options to choose from. Well, twinsets are back in a big way for spring and we should all rejoice that this matching tank + cardigan combo is back in fashion. I have long relied on a cardigan + tank or shell for easy 4 season styling that can carry you throughout the day from warm afternoons to chilly evenings. Twinsets are also fantastic pieces for travel, as you can get so many looks out of this simple set.

First of all, J.Crew's featherweight cashmere twinsets are just perfect. Offered in a beautiful array of colors from neutrals to the happiest hues, there is something for everyone. I love the cut of the shell which hits at just the right spot on your shoulders and the slightly cropped length of both pieces works beautifully with high waisted trousers and skirts. Plus, the lightweight cashmere knit will keep you comfortable all day and night. My favorite way to wear this set is to button the cardigan and drape it over my shoulders with buttons hidden from view, knotting the sleeves loosely right below your clavicle. This creates a face slimming V around your neck and elevated scarf silhouette. When the temperatures dip I'll put on the cardigan and either button it or leave it open depending on how much warmth I need. Versatile and chic!

Here are a few ways I'll be styling this preppy staple this spring and summer!

  • I love the way a fitted twinset balances the volume of the midi skirt I'm wearing in this post. My skirt comes in three colors (white needs a slip FYI!) but I love the black stitching at the hem which ties the top and bottom together beautifully. It also has elastic at the back of the waistband for a super comfortable yet elegant look. Cap toe heels are another classic staple, and though mine are old Gianvito Rossi, but you can get a similar look with these! Following my rule of three, I kept the look simple with my new favorite handbag, pearl studs and a tennis bracelet. (I also like how this skirt looks with just the cardigan buttoned up as a top, like the model here!)
  • Pair your twinset styled like I do in this post with a pair of high waisted, cropped denim. I love this pair of light wash jeans with a button fly, my twinset in black, and a black patent slingbacks. Add sunnies and a chic bag for a day running around town!
  • A twinset and high waisted trousers are an effortless combo that can work for work or play. For a polished office look, I own and love these trousers and the fit is uber-flattering. Or go with cream trousers and a navy twinset, and this breton stripe bag for a coastal look. Or for a fun night out pair with statement trousers like these! Whichever high-waisted pants you choose, you can wear a twinset styled like I do in this post or just the sweater buttoned as a top, just tuck into your trousers with a pointed heel or slingback!
  • I love a twinset with shorts (like this from last summer!) and recommend you pick a pair of shorts in a looser fit with pleats to balance the fitted top. A few favorites include these white linen shorts, this blush floral pair or these fun paisley shorts (the pattern placement is super slimming!)
