Transitioning your White Dresses for the Season Ahead
As July’s crisp red, white, and blue pairings give way to August, white dresses take on a new character when styled with warmer tones and richer materials. For this post, I reviewed the bestselling white dresses from the past few months and selected the reader favorites already hanging in so many of your closets, showing exactly how I would transition each one for late summer and beyond. A crisp white cotton dress or ethereal eyelet skirt can feel perfectly appropriate for late summer when paired with accessories in richer hues such as cognac, chocolate, burgundy, or olive. Leathers and suedes introduce warmth and depth, while details like woven finishes, blanket stitching, and beautiful saddlery create a subtle nod to the season ahead. Thoughtfully incorporating these autumnal accessories now not only gives your summer whites a fresh perspective, but also allows you to enjoy those investment pieces longer before pairing them with autumnal silk, tweed, wool, and deeper fall colors once the temperatures truly begin to cool.
- The embroidery on this ivory midi skirt is absolutely stunning. I love how it paired with the matching camisole and rich chocolate pumps for a beautiful lunch at Ballyfin, and I'll be pairing the skirt with a chocolate turtleneck and the same pumps come September. (Note: I've been wearing this strapless bra for delicate necklines, which is perhaps the best strapless bra ever. It isn't bulky like some others, has a great shape, and does not slip!)
- This balloon-sleeve mini dress has been a reader favorite, and no wonder, it can be worn a hundred different ways. Fantastic with a chic suede hobo bag and flats for August, or pair with this gorgeous calfskin bucket bag (it has the most beautiful saddlery details) and these timeless knee-high boots come October.
- Flutter sleeves and a lace-up bodice give this cream cotton midi dress such beautiful movement. Style with rich chocolate brown kitten heels and a suede shoulder bag for a transitional look that feels effortless.
- This smocked midi dress (on sale for $105!) is a blank canvas for transitional styling. If you own these wrap sandals in saddle they're a no-brainer for August, or I love pairing these suede sandals and this suede bag for a Labor Day getaway. (Another bra note: I find a t-shirt bra (this is my favorite) works best under smocking like this for a smooth and flattering silhouette.)
- I own this smocked dress in red, but quite a few of you mentioned you love it in white. (I wore this strapless bra with it so you don't see straps poking out of that pretty neckline.) Pair with this charming suede bucket bag and these coordinating suede mules.
- This crease-resistant linen maxi dress is one of those pieces that looks polished without trying, and it lends itself to September styling easily. Add an heirloom-worthy chocolate crossbody (I own this bag in black and it's gorgeous!) and deep brown woven Mary Jane flats. So chic!
- This white halter maxi dress looks wonderful with an embellished belt and clog sandals, but you can also take advantage of the long skirt to pair with refined cowboy boots (gorgeous but pricey, less expensive here) and a wrap sweater like this for a bit of a Western Ralph Lauren feel.
- This knit mini dress ($50 off with STACIE50) is the perfect transitional piece. Cinch it at the waist with this reversible leather scarf belt and this silk scarf for instant autumn polish. (I wore this exact combo in early spring here.) I'd pair with this bucket bag and these cognac heels.
- Already thinking about fall? This ivory bouclé button-front maxi has a slightly heavier texture that works perfectly into cooler weather. Pair with kitten-heeled slingbacks in espresso suede or warm tweed (both only $128!) and a woven leather clutch.
- Pair this sweet eyelet puff sleeve top with the coordinating eyelet skirt, which looks stunning with strappy kitten heels.
- One of my favorite summer dresses, this embroidered linen maxi dress transitions beautifully with brown accessories. Play up the stitched seams with macramé heels and this gorgeous Savette bag that is (somehow!) 50% off.
