Everyday Fall Neutrals That Are Anything but Boring

There’s something especially inviting about getting dressed in fall, when soft textures, warm layers, and rich neutrals come back into rotation. This edit is all about the pieces I want to live in this season: cozy cashmere, chunky knits, corduroy, suede, quilted jackets, and easy layers in shades of chocolate brown, camel, cream, and olive. Most are relaxed enough for everyday wear, with a few more polished pieces mixed in for work or dinner, but everything shares that same comfortable, understated feel. These are the pieces that form the backbone of a wardrobe and make getting dressed feel effortless, while still leaving you polished and beautifully put together.

  • Every wardrobe needs a classic trench coat, and this one is perfection. (I've had a Burberry trench on my wishlist for years, but the one I'm wearing above is 1/3 the price, wonderful quality and a near identical gabardine fabric.) Layer it over a cashmere sweater and jeans now, or toss it over a sundress in spring. A true year-round investment.
  • Alex Mill has so many quality, well-priced staples, especially their sweaters. I'm wearing their bestselling washed cashmere crewneck above and it's a gorgeous marled chocolate brown, but comes in over 10 colors. Layer it over this brown striped button-up for an easy way to top off your favorite jeans, or tuck into trousers for work, or pair with a wool mini skirt!
  • For cozy weekends, a wrap sweater is one of my favorite pieces. This Fair Isle cardigan is absolutely dreamy (a nice wool-cotton blend!), and this bandana print version in wool/cashmere just launched this morning. (It looks like this Alanui cardigan, but is under $500 - I bet this will go quickly!) Belt either cardigan for structure over a slim fit turtleneck, or wear it open and relaxed with jeans and boots by the fire.
  • Leopard ballet flats will be a wardrobe workhorse this season, and these are the neutral-with-a-twist that goes with absolutely everything from my cigarette jeans (15% off with STACIE15) above to shift dresses.
  • These shearling-lined clogs in the prettiest bronze suede will be perfect for padding around the house when it gets chilly.
  • Wide-wale corduroy pants are a fall essential you'll reach for constantly. These look amazing with a Fair Isle sweater and boots, or worn casually with a classic rugby shirt, slim fit henley or brushed cotton button-down.
  • Kallmeyer makes beautiful classics with a fashion-y twist and I have a few pieces in my cart. This mocha cashmere-blend blazer with a detachable scarf is at the top of my wishlist. Incredibly chic over a slim knit and cigarette pants for work, or dressed down with a simple tee and jeans. (Also, love the idea of this pin to keep the scarf in place!)
  • This luxurious brown suede top handle bag (12% off with STACIE12) is the kind of piece that instantly elevates any outfit. Roomy enough for a laptop, it works beautifully for the office or weekend errands. A few other refined everyday bags include this bucket bag and this woven leather shoulder bag, which has incredible quality and is reminiscent of Bottega's woven leather without the Bottega price.
  • If you're wearing mostly neutrals, I like pulling out chunkier jewelry to add a bit of interest. Above I'm wearing my Adina Reyter initial charms, but also love these drop earrings or these hoops with a turtleneck and your hair up.
  • An ivory cable-knit turtleneck like this, this, or this is the definition of a forever piece. The intricate cable knits add so much interest. Pair with wide-leg cords or your favorite jeans.
  • I'm convinced everyone needs a suede skirt in their wardrobe. I'm partial to a beautiful midi skirt, but a mini skirt version is equally chic! I'd style it with an ivory knit (like the ones above) and tall boots or a bow neck blouse and ballet flats.
  • I'm already thinking about cozy accessories, and saving them to my shopping lists. From this whipstitch belt with a subtle western feel, to this cashmere cable beanie, to the perfect plaid cashmere scarf, it's the little details that make the outfit.
  • I'm trying to keep this blog post casual, but I own this midi dress in gray from last year and it was one of my favorite pieces. They just brought it back in espresso brown! The tie waist is incredibly flattering and comfortable. Add gold jewelry and suede boots for a polished fall dinner look.
  • Casual jackets in neutral hues will be your best friend this season, whether you opt for a heritage houndstooth (I tried this on in NYC, size down), a classic quilted jacket, or a barn jacket with chic brass toggles.
  • Chocolate brown with that iconic check detail makes this tote a forever bag. Perfect for work with trousers and a camel coat, or weekends with jeans and a cozy knit.
  • Handwoven in Naples, Italy, these saddle-toned ballet flats have the arch support and cushioning you actually need. They were just restocked after selling out 2x already this year, and I wear mine with everything from jeans to cords to mini skirts. (I have them in navy suede as well and they're both amazing!)
  • Another wardrobe staple is a camel turtleneck. The braided stitch detail along the sleeves on this one (20% off with StacieM20) is so elegant, but I'm also tempted by this bestselling turtleneck for $72!? If you need a dressy turtleneck, this sequined knit has a beautiful shimmer without being over the top.
  • Retro vibes meet fall neutrals in these brown suede sneakers with a navy stripe. So cute with straight-leg jeans, corduroys, or twill.
