Fall Formula: Wax Jackets + Turtleneck Sweaters
Who is ready to dive head first into fall fashion? You all loved my fall outfit formulas blog post so I wanted to share a few more thoughts on each of my favorite autumn outfit combos, starting with my go-to casual combo of waxed barn jackets and turtleneck sweaters.
Wax jackets are a wardrobe staple for any women who appreciates classic style. This lightweight outerwear option feels quintessentially fall due to their autumnal colors and corduroy collar. I love the big patch pockets for carrying snacks on mountain hikes or treats for dog walks, and many options are lined with a charming plaid. I’m such a fan I’ve collected several takes on the barn jacket over the years including this green one, this classic Barbour, this tattersal check, this navy special edition (almost sold out!), and this tan version.
As for turtlenecks, anything with a stand up collar will do, from classic cotton rollneck sweaters, to funnel neck fleeces as seen here. I especially love this cashmere cable knit rollneck, as the collar is wide enough to feature a silk scarf, and the all-over cable looks much more luxurious than it's $178 price tag. (Plus it's crazy soft!) Another go-to is this chunky cable turtleneck, which has a thick fold over collar that looks great with wax barn jackets as seen here. Read on for more styling ideas around this favorite outfit formula!
How to Accessorize
Add a silk scarf – I love the look of adding a silk scarf under the collar of a sweater like I did in this post. It’s a great way to add a dash of interest and an easy way to brighten up darker looks. This works best if the scarf pulls in a color or two from the sweater or jacket – or both! My beautiful scarf from new-to-me brand Fleur Sauvage perfectly ties in the green of my jacket and blue of the sweater in it’s lovely lily of the valley print. To get the look just fold a 90cm square scarf on the diagonal then roll into a long ribbon 1.5-2″ thick. I wrap it around my neck twice and tie, tucking the ends out of view. (I’ll often mess with this a bit to get the part of the pattern I want to show.)
Add a wool or cashmere scarf – Since wax jackets are usually worn on more temperate days, you aren’t trying to bundle against extreme cold, adding a plaid wool or cashmere scarf is mostly to add interest to your outfit. It should drape over your neck and you can either wear it inside your coat collar or outside depending on your preference. (See here for “inside” and here for “outside“.)
Add a collared shirt – Again, this adds a bit of interest. My favorite shirts that work with almost any sweater/jacket combo are a white oxford or a chambray shirt. Pop the collar so it peeks out above your turtleneck. You can combo this with a wool or cashmere scarf as seen here.
What to wear on the bottom
Relaxed fit pants – Whether white denim, blue jeans or corduroy, a slightly cropped, high rise pant with a relaxed fit feels current with this jacket/turtleneck combo. Tuck your sweater in – or don’t. It’s an easy Saturday look for all your fall adventures. You can wear relaxed fit pants with loafers, booties, or even Bean Boots depending on the weather, just make sure the hem is wide enough to go over the top of your boot.
Skinny Jeans or skinny cords – These are best tucked into wellies or knee high riding boots, to maintain the relaxed country feel evocative of equestrian attire. See an example here.
