Timeless Sweaters Worth the Investment

A good sweater can stand the test of time like few other pieces of clothing. While what's in vogue for trousers, denim and jackets come and go, sweaters can have incredible staying power. I remember my first J.Crew purchase on the way back from summer camp in 7th grade, a blue and white striped cotton crewneck sweater (this was the one!) I loved it and wore it frequently into my early 20s when I was living in NYC. Similarly, my Ralph Lauren sweater above is from 2002 or 2003 and now *almost* vintage, but aside from one little pull it's in incredible shape, and is something I'd happily buy new today. (In fact, Ralph Lauren has been releasing collections of vintage pieces this fall, and seems my sweater was a part of the collection!)

Because a sweater can be enjoyed for years (or decades) to come, they make fabulous gifts especially when you select one in a timeless style made of all natural materials like wool, cashmere, cotton and linen. (Include a little sweater comb in the gift to remove pills and keep the gift looking brand new!)

Whether you're shopping for yourself or a wonderful woman in your life here's a roundup of my favorite sweaters I own and love as well as some new styles I have my eye on!

  • I just got this cable mockneck sweater and this brushed cashmere polo and both are the most delicious soft cappuccino color. (Somewhere between beige and gray - just lovely!) Even though brushed cashmere is a bit of a trend right now I think the overall design of the polo has real staying power and feels dressy with a sparkle-y earring. (You can get 20% off your order with "STACIE20" through Dec 20th!)
  • This lambswool cardigan feels old school (in the best way) from the colors to the cut.
  • This wrap cardigan is like a big hug and just the thing to wrap up in on chilly mornings or throw on over a t-shirt and jeans for a coffee date. (You also likely know how much I love this brand's lounge sets. Divine!
  • The red and white pattern on this cardigan feels very holiday - a chic option for throwing over a silk slip dress or with jeans!
  • This cashmere funnelneck is such a smart design. The sleeves and body have a slim fit so you can slip it on under your best blazers, but the opulent funnel neck is SO big and SO cozy you can skip the scarf. (Currently 40% off when purchased with a blazer through Sunday with code "PAIRS40".)
  • Cashmere intarsia sweaters are my love language and this favorite just went on sale along with this festive red version!
  • This chunky red cardigan feels like a vintage find!
  • Ralph Lauren fair isle sweaters are pretty much collectors items and I've been wearing this one on repeat all season long. Similarly this wrap cardigan has me dreaming of evenings in a cabin with a fire.
  • Fisherman Sweaters have remained virtually unchanged for almost 100 years and with good reason, the original design was perfect. I have this sweater in both cream and oatmeal and it's a go-to for that "weekend in the country" vibe.
  • Purdey is the definition of timeless, and I love the addition of a cheeky little pocket to this cashmere turtleneck.
  • This ski sweater will be your go-to every time you hit the slopes.
  • This bow embellished cardigan is a sweet sweater that feels festive now, but can be worn from September to March. (Use a flatiron to smooth out the ribbons for a big fluffy bow!)
  • Every girl with classic style needs a cashmere cable knit sweater. It's such a timeless choice they've been making it for decades.
  • A slim-fitting cashmere turtleneck is a wardrobe workhorse and looks wonderful paired with a fancy skirt or layered under a chunky fair isle knit. I used to buy them from Ralph Lauren, but I find these are just as nice quality and 1/5 the price!
  • I've waxed poetic on how good Tuckernuck's Cashmere is (especially for the price) and this cardigan, this turtleneck and this v-neck are all flattering wardrobe staples you'll reach for again and again.
  • I'm such a sucker for donegal anything and this crew neck is a classic chunky knit.
