What to Pack for a Week Long Ski Trip in the Alps

Hello from the Austrian Alps! It's been three years since we last went skiing and it has been wonderful to get out and spend time in the crisp mountain air. On this trip we're splitting our time between the Austrian and Swiss Alps, getting a taste of new destinations in Europe's beautiful alpine region. As always, I look forward to sharing the hotels, restaurants and recommendations from the trip in case they might inspire your own winter adventures.

Below you'll find everything I packed for a week long ski trip in the Alps. Surprisingly, everything below fit into one checked bag and one carry-on and this tote bag. I always pack a lot of options, and more than is really necessary, since this is a fashion blog and I try to show a variety of outfits that work both on and off the slopes. I hope you enjoy our photo dairies from this spectacular part of the world as a beautiful escape from the normal day-to-day.

Jackets/Coats

With a forecast of temperatures in the 20s and 30s and lots of time outdoors, a couple good coats will ensure you're ready for anything. I brought along a range of outerwear from ski jackets to faux fur to wool numbers for every type of weather.

  • A wool coat - The gorgeous green color of this long duffle coat feels appropriately alpine, but isn't overly heavy making it a great piece to transition into the spring months. I'm loving longer coats this year, as they create an elegant, streamlined look.
  • Faux Fur is a fun way to bundle up. I ordered several options to try, and found two super chic winners including this elegant cropped taupe jacket and this chocolate faux fur bomber! They both feel so gorgeous and my baby boy loves petting them. (Great when you want to keep your kid occupied at dinner!)
  • Parkas - I'm bringing my favorite black ski jacket that I've had for several years which is lightweight but very windproof and warm, and this cozy green parka which is a little longer and majorly insulated for chilly mountain hikes.
  • Down Vests - When you really need to layer up tucking a vest under your coat is an easy way to add a lot of warmth. This down vest is perfect for playing in the snow and my favorite black feather vest is coming too - dressy enough to throw on over a skirt and sweater for a nice dinner.
  • A shearling coat - This shearling coat is the warmest piece I'm bringing. I love the the coat's slightly 60's vibe with bracelet sleeves and the perfect cocoon shape which reminds me of one of Audrey Hepburn's iconic coats.
  • Wrap - This fringe-y wool wrap is the perfect piece to throw on over any outfit to make it more mountain-y.
  • Ski Suit - I have wanted a ski suit for years and finally took the plunge and got this red stunner and it is so fun and comfortable to ski in. Plus, David never has a problem finding me on the mountain. (The brand runs a bit small so I recommend sizing up one.)

Sweaters/Tops

I'm packed lots of wool, cashmere and merino for the slopes, and often opt to wear natural fiber sweaters while skiing instead of technical fabrics. Most of these sweaters work equally well while skiing or worn as a part of everyday outfits, perfect to ensure they can be enjoyed more than a few days a year.

  • Turtlenecks are like a sweater with a built in scarf. I'm packing this red fair isle, a gray marled turtleneck and this red cable knit one. I like to layer thinner turtlenecks under my other sweaters and brought a cream sleeveless turtleneck and this black slim turtleneck to do just that! For days on the slopes I have a few ski sweaters including this old chevron turtleneck (one left!) and this racing stripe sweater.
  • Solid crewnecks are perfect for mixing and matching with everything from skirts to jeans. I love the oversized shape of this olive green sweater (10% off with "Stacie10") and this cashmere crewneck that has a vintage feel from the thick ribbed neckline to the bracelet sleeves. This is not a crewneck, but this cashmere [product_link id="39841" text=""getaway" sweater" item="Alice Walk The Cashmere Getaway"] is a 4 season favorite.
  • A few fun sweaters include this cream fair isle which has a slightly cropped shape that looks good with high waisted bottoms and this hand-knit red cardigan that has a wonderful retro 70's feel to it.

Bottoms

  • Blue jeans - I never go anywhere without my favorite relaxed denim. They're so comfortable I've worn them on overnight flights and long road trips. I like throwing them on with a sweater when heading down to breakfast in the mornings. (Run TTS and you can get 15% off with "Stacie15".)
  • Black skinny jeans - Great for tucking into snow boots, these are super comfortable and only $70!
  • Black Flared Jeans - These jeans will instantly add 2" to your height and make your legs look amazing. Wear with pointed booties (I love these) to a dinner. (Also 15% off with "Stacie15"
  • Midi skirts - I love wearing midi skirts with knee high boots, and brought this olive marled skirt (a good silhouette at a great price!) and an old plaid Dolce and Gabbana skirt.
  • Mini Skirt - A wool mini skirt with black tights and knee high boots is a winning winter outfit formula
  • Cream wool trousers - A chic option for an elegant evening, I love the fit of these cream trousers, but petite girls will need to have them hemmed!
  • A silk maxi skirt - this old grey and cream maxi skirt is one of my favorite items of clothing, and is so comfortable and easy to wear.

Footwear

  • You'll need no-nonsense boots for trekking through snowy destinations and I'm packing my shearling Bean boots and had hoped these black lace up boots arrive in time for snowy conditions in town. (They're on massive sale and only $50 right now!)
  • For evening looks I'm packing black knee high boots, these cap toe booties and these dress booties in taupe to pair with my trousers and skirts. When you're bundling up in a lot of layers I find a pointed toe helps elongate your look.

Accessories

A few fun additions for the finishing touch on alpine outfits.

  • Do you balaclava? I love these knit hoods as an alternative to a beanie, because you don't need to stuff them in a pocket - you can just have the hood hang off your neck when not in use. (I'm wearing one in the photo above!) I'm bringing this cream one and this red cable version to wear on and off the slopes. (Plus, they are extra warm since they cover your neck and conceal helmet hair during an apres-ski drink.)
  • Hats - Other hats include a cashmere beanie, this shearling pillbox hat that I'm utterly obsessed with, and I brought my own ski helmet.
  • Mittens/gloves - I have two pairs for skiing in case one gets wet (these white ones and this black leather pair) as well as nordic mittens and brown leather gloves as well.
  • Socks - I brought several pairs for skiing and to wear with my regular with boots, as well as my favorite travel companion - compression socks!
  • Bags - I usually bring several options when traveling but since we're skiing most days I only brought two, and could have gotten away with one. This shearling clutch is the ultimate winter evening bag and goes with almost everything I brought, I also packed my Ferragamo bag for walking around town.
  • A bathing suit - Many alpine chalets and hotels have wonderful saunas for warming up at the end of the day and a suit will definitely come in handy. Our hotel has a heated outdoor pool which I'm definitely looking forward to!
  • Jewelry - I don't wear much jewelry on the slopes, but did bring a gorgeous new pair of drop earrings for dinners, as well as a few other favorites that you can see below.
  • A belt - In autumn and winter a great belt really pulls your look together. I've been loving this black one with a gold buckle!
  • Pajamas - I brought these classic pajamas as well as an oatmeal colored lounge set for hanging out in our hotel room.
  • Thermals - I packed this merino wool thermal long johns suit for skiing on the coldest of days!
