Summer’s Most Swoon-Worthy Bags

If you know me, you know my summers run on natural straw and raffia — the warm, woven neutrals that go with everything and feel like the season itself. So I surprised even myself when I fell for the raffia shopper in burgundy I'm wearing above. It isn't the color you'd expect for July, which is exactly what I've come to love about it: that deep, wine-soaked tone is a gentle twist on the classic summer bag, and it's been the easiest thing to wear. While my color is sold out, there are a bunch of burgundy raffia bags like this, this and this (both under $100), and this that all have similar, outfit-making star power. My burgundy bag earned its place right alongside all my beloved naturals, and that's really what this edit is about: the (mostly) woven bags I'm carrying everywhere this summer, in every shade from classic straw to that perfect berry, and a few gorgeous leather finds too. I've gathered favorites at a range of price points, so whatever you're drawn to, there's a summer companion here waiting for you. Below, I’ve rounded up the summer bags I can’t stop thinking about, from everyday baskets to evening pieces, each one chosen for that effortless warm-weather magic I want in my closet year after year.

The pieces at the top of my wishlist

Every season there are a few pieces I can't stop thinking about — the ones already living in my cart, waiting for a "yes." These are mine for summer: the bags I keep styling in my head before I've even worn them. If you only invest in one or two this season, start here. They're the styles I believe will earn their place on your arm for many summers to come.

  • This beautiful raffia tote has the perfect relaxed shape and feminine crochet detail for farmers market runs, beach days, or thrown over your shoulder with a linen dress and sandals all summer long.
  • I love the shape of this stunning leather clutch by one of my all-time favorite, yet still under-the-radar handbag brands. I'm thinking the chocolate color. Which do you prefer?
  • Sleek, structured, and surprisingly versatile, this black pochette in basket weave raffia works for summer weddings, rooftop dinners, or anywhere you want a polished evening look with a seasonal twist. I have the black suede version already but think I need the raffia version for summer!
  • If you need one evening bag this summer, this navy tipped raffia clutch is it. The signature knot closure and slim silhouette look stunning with a slip dress and heels for dinner al fresco. Brilliant with all of your nautical summer looks.
  • I just ordered this knot basket tote and love the clean lines and leather trim. The neutral tone pairs with everything, from a printed caftan on vacation to linen trousers at home. This is a BIG bag for big plans.

Totes & Baskets

This is the workhorse of warm-weather dressing, and the style of bag I reach for without thinking. Whether you're hauling everything down to the beach for a long day in the sun, packing a picnic for the park, gathering tomatoes and peonies at the Saturday farmers market, or simply running errands with a coffee in hand — a good raffia tote is your everyday summer companion. Roomy, unfussy, and somehow always chic, it's the piece that makes leaving the house feel effortless.

  • This fringe-y tote from Zimmermann is the quintessential vacation bag. Just the thing to pair with a caftan and oversized sunnies.
  • Sometimes the simplest bag is the best one. This raffia tote with leather straps has a timeless shape that works season after season. Similarly this relaxed tote feels like something you picked up at a french market on vacation a decade ago that you still love.
  • Hunting Season consistently makes the most elegant woven bags, and this trapeze basket is no exception. The weaving is as fabulous as my Loewe tote, without the logo or designer price tag. I've worn both bags with everything from sundresses to tailored shorts.
  • You guys sold out this handsome striped tote when I featured it last year and now it's back and 50% off! Perfect for the office or a weekend getaway, it also comes in tan canvas and olive leather versions.
  • The navy color and bamboo handle on this braided raffia tote give it such a preppy, coastal feel. I love the shape which is tailored and relaxed at the same time. It comes in several colors and finishes and I'm trying to decide between the navy raffia or this cognac leather version.
  • If you love color, this striped raffia basket tote is such a fun statement piece. (It reminds me of this Valentino bag without the oversized logo.) I'd let the bag do the talking and keep the outfit simple, a solid dress or denim and a buttondown.
  • This wooden beaded basket bag from Saint Laurent is a true collector's piece. The artisanal quality makes it perfect for resort dinners, garden parties, or any occasion that calls for something special. I got stopped several times while in Italy to ask where it's from. (It has a logo charm that is easy to remove for more discreet enjoyment.)
  • The rich and varied chocolate weave on this oversized raffia tote is so beautiful. Perfect for packing everything for the beach.
  • Nautical stripes make this crossbody bag feel like a summer weekend in a bag. I love the detachable strap for versatility, and the navy and white palette pairs perfectly with denim, red accents, or crisp whites.

Shoulder Bags

When you want your hands free but still want to feel pulled-together, a shoulder bag is the answer. It's the in-between hero — substantial enough to carry you through a day of wandering cobblestone streets or browsing a seaside boutique, refined enough to slip straight into an early dinner al fresco. Tucked under the arm, it adds an instant note of polish to the simplest linen dress.

  • A black raffia bag might be my favorite summer trick. This crocheted tote with its leather base feels polished enough for city days and relaxed enough for vacation. Plus, it lays beautifully against the body perfect for a day when you have to carry all the things.
  • This woven leather bag has a gorgeous shape and reminds me of Bottega.
  • The hobo shape on this raffia shoulder bag with its leather trim feels very easy and elevated. I tried it on in Charleston earlier this spring and it's lays beautifully against the body. Perfect slung over your shoulder with a sundress, or paired with tailored shorts and a silk cami.
  • Here is another fabulous hobo bag with big chunky raffia knots similar to The Row. One of the most premium looking raffia bags I've seen for under $1,500.
  • Simple, unfussy, and endlessly wearable, this handknotted raffia bucket bag from J.Crew is a fantastic everyday summer option. Throw it over your shoulder with a sundress, denim cutoffs, or a casual maxi.
  • Leather buckle details and a crochet raffia body give this top handle bag such a charming, artisan quality. Use the crossbody strap for sightseeing, then carry by the handle at dinner.

Clutches & Evening

These are for the golden-hour moments: rooftop cocktails, a summer wedding by the water, a long candlelit dinner that drifts past sunset. A beautifully woven or beaded clutch is the smallest piece you'll carry and often the one that finishes the whole look — proof that you don't need much when the few things you bring are this lovely. Slip in a lipstick, your keys, and let the evening unfold.

  • I have this little white wicker clutch and it's such a versatile piece, made all the more sweet at 50% off!
  • Elongated and elegant, this natural rattan clutch has a distinctly New England feel. Carry it to a clambake with a striped dress or to brunch with a breezy blouse and linen trousers.
  • This swingy little beaded number holds your lipstick, a phone, and credit card, and is guarenteed to be the life of the party.
  • Hand crochet in a rich navy makes this raffia clutch (20% off with StacieM20) stand out. It's the perfect size for a summer party and pairs beautifully with white or coral dresses.
  • Every summer wardrobe needs a clean white leather clutch that goes with everything. The gold hardware adds just enough polish for weddings, rehearsal dinners, or date night with a slip dress and heels.
  • Raffia and leather together is my favorite summer combination, and this clutch nails it. The tan leather flap gives it structure. Toss it in your tote for daytime, then carry it solo to dinner.
  • Talk about a statement piece. This satin beaded clutch with cascading acrylic beads is pure drama. I'd carry it to a summer wedding or rooftop cocktail party with a simple column dress.
  • Pamela Munson never disappoints, and this white rattan clutch is no exception. The lizard-embossed leather flap elevates it beyond casual. Perfect tucked under your arm at an al fresco dinner with a linen dress.
  • Polished enough for evening yet understated enough for daytime, this off-white nappa leather clutch is endlessly versatile. Pair with a printed midi skirt and silk top for a summer dinner party.

Statement, Structured & Mini

Not every bag has to work hard — some are simply there to delight. The structured silhouettes and jewel-like minis in this edit are the punctuation marks of summer dressing: a sculptural top-handle that elevates jeans and a white tee, or a tiny wicker treasure carried purely for the joy of it. When you want a single, considered piece to make the statement, this is where you'll find it.

  • You all seemed to love this natural mini raffia bag from Miu Miu as much as I did. (Actually, 40% of you preferred it in navy and I'll admit I'm torn.) Both pack totally flat making them the smartest travel bag ever.
  • Bottega's signature knot detail in raffia? Yes please. This crossbody with olive leather trim is the kind of investment piece you'll reach for every summer. Take off the shoulder strap to pair with a linen dress or wear it crossbody with shorts and a blazer.
  • Oscar's wicker reimagining of the Poppy silhouette is absolutely gorgeous. This olive and natural top handle bag works for garden parties with a midi skirt (this!) or weekends with denim and a striped top.
  • I've had my eye on this sculptural wicker and leather bag for a few summers, a polished option for work (if you don't have to carry your laptop) or play.
  • Closing this list out with another gorgeous burgundy bag, this time in a crochet raffia. I love the scalloped trim.
